Welcome to the Bishop’s Stortford History Society website.

Bishop’s Stortford is in Hertfordshire, approximately 30 miles from London. Its recorded history stretches back to the Roman period when a small settlement was established. Currently (2018) it has approximately 39,000 inhabitants and continues to expand with new housing development particularly on the northern side of the town.

The history society was formed in 1955 and has a growing membership of upwards of 50 members. It meets for a programme of talks and films as well as occasionally for joint meetings with the Bishop’s Stortford Museum. Addditionally, trips to places of historic interest are organised.

Up until recently local history was the focus of the society. It is currently undergoing a change of direction and expanding its remit to encompass a broader historic landscape as well as developing its links with the Bishop’s Stortford Museum.

If you have an interest in any aspect of history and would like to come to our talks, join us on our trips or begin some research of your own we would be pleased if you would contact us.

Bishop’s Stortford History Society events are held approximately once a month.  Events that are currently scheduled are shown below.  Unless stated otherwise events begin at 7.30 pm and finish by around 9.15 pm.
