Welcome to the Bishop’s Stortford History Society website.
Bishop’s Stortford is in Hertfordshire, approximately 30 miles north-east of London. Its recorded history stretches back to the Roman period when a small settlement was established. In 2025 the estimated population was 44,000 to 45,000, and the town continues to expand with new housing developments to the north and the south of the town.
The Bishop’s Stortford History Society was formed in 1955 and has a growing membership of upwards of 100 members. Monthly talks are held between September and May. Unless stated otherwise meetings begin at 7.30 pm and finish by about 9.30 pm. In addition trips to places of historic interest are organised.
Until recently, the focus of the Society was local history. It has recently undergone a change of direction and expanded its remit to encompass a broader historic landscape.
If you have an interest in any aspect of history and would like to come to our talks, join us on our trips or begin some research of your own, we would be pleased to hear from you. Please see ‘Contact Us’
